Titans Part Ways With Head Coach Mike Vrabel
NASHVILLE – The Titans have parted ways with head coach Mike Vrabel.
A press conference featuring General Manager Ran Carthon is set to take place on Tuesday afternoon at Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park.
Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk released the following statement on Tuesday:
Earlier today, I had a conversation with Mike Vrabel, informing him of my decision to bring about a change in the head coaching position. As I conveyed to Coach Vrabel, making this decision was one of the most challenging tasks I've faced as Controlling Owner. I deeply appreciate Mike's contributions to the Tennessee Titans, both on and off the field. Those who have encountered him know the passion and authenticity he brings, along with his strong support for the Nashville community. We extend our best wishes to Mike, Jen, and the entire Vrabel family in their future endeavors.
In the ever-evolving landscape of the NFL, I believe that teams poised for sustained success are those fostering alignment and collaboration across all football functions. Last year, we initiated a shift in our football leadership approach, implementing various personnel changes to advance our strategy. Upon further evaluation of our team's state, I concluded that a fresh perspective from a new coaching staff would also benefit the team.
I firmly believe in the potential of the Tennessee Titans to become a premier NFL franchise. Our dedicated fans deserve nothing less, and the journey ahead may involve tough decisions. Today's decision reflects not only my disappointment in the past two seasons but also the realization that additional changes are necessary for us to fully realize our vision.
I don't shy away from expressing my unapologetically high expectations for the football team and every facet of the Titans organization. Our vision extends beyond merely achieving a positive win-loss record; it is about consistently competing for championships. Despite the disappointment of this season, I see early signs of progress. We acquired a promising young quarterback and added several talented players to our roster last year. With an upcoming coaching search, a favorable cap situation, and a top-10 draft position, this offseason is pivotal in our history. I'm eager for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the weeks and months to come. We are prepared to rise to the occasion.
Vrabel assumed the role of Titans head coach on January 20, 2018, steering the team for six seasons.
During his initial two seasons, the Titans secured a 9-7 record each year, progressing to the AFC Championship Game in the 2019 season. The subsequent season saw the team finish with an 11-5 record but stumble in the first playoff round.
In 2021, despite entering the postseason as the AFC's top seed, the Titans suffered a home playoff loss to the Bengals.
Recent struggles befell the team, concluding the 2022 season with seven consecutive losses and a 7-10 overall record. The following season proved challenging as well, ending with a 6-11 mark, placing the Titans at the bottom of the AFC South. They struggled against division opponents with a 1-5 record. In 2023, the Titans ranked 28th in total offense and 18th in total defense in the NFL. Midway through the season, Vrabel made the decision to replace special teams coach Craig Aukerman.
Under Vrabel's tenure, the Titans posted a 6-18 record in the most recent 24 games dating back to the previous season.
Vrabel's final coaching record with the Titans, encompassing regular season and playoffs, stood at 56-48.
As Vrabel departs, the organization initiates the search for his successor.
